Starland Vocal Band

Starland Vocal Band was an American pop group formed in 1976, best known for their blend of soft rock and vocal harmony styles. The band consisted of members Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert, Jon Carroll, and Margot Chapman. They gained mainstream recognition with their hit single “Afternoon Delight,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1976 and became emblematic of the era's soft rock sound. Their self-titled debut album, released the same year, featured this hit and helped propel the band into the spotlight. The Starland Vocal Band also had a successful variety show on CBS from 1977 to 1978, which showcased their musical talents and contributed to their popularity. Despite their initial success, the band struggled to replicate their early hits, with subsequent albums failing to achieve the same commercial impact. However, their sound and harmonies influenced later soft rock and pop groups. The band's legacy is often remembered for its quintessential 1970s vibe, and “Afternoon Delight” remains a staple of nostalgic playlists. Their brief rise and fall illustrate the volatile nature of pop music, yet they continue to be recognized for their distinctive sound in that era.
